The Atlantic Intercollegiate Equestrian League was developed to give Maritime university students an opportunity to participate in equestrian sport with like-minded students while studying at school. The goal of our league is to allow students a way to continue riding and competing without the same time and financial commitments that are normally required for the sport. The AIEL is currently composed of 7 universities around the maritimes (SMU, DAL, DAL AC, Acadia, StFX, UPEI, and MSVU).
AIEL shows occur about 4 times per semester and each school takes turn hosting the competition at a variety of facilities around the province. The league is open to riders of all skill levels; offering hunt seat equitation classes that range from walk-trot to open over fences. Horses are kindly donated by the host barns and riders compete on mounts that they have not previously ridden.
The AIEL is student-run and is made up of teams representing each participating university. Although shows are a competition between rival schools, the AIEL foster a sense of camaraderie at the shows with everyone pitching in where necessary and cheering on both their teammates and competitors!
